Five Faves

Most every mama I talk to is stuck in those 5 meals they always feed their kids. I know I am. It's hard to break out and try something new. I'm always worried Eloise won't eat. Lily pretty much inhales everything I set in front of her. So I thought of sharing mine, in hopes of inspiring others, showing my girls what they ate for 5 years straight, and inheriting some ideas from other mama's.

Here are the Ahl family top 5:

  1. Black Bean and Rice Quesadilla's or just in a bowl
  2. Garden Burger's
  3. French toast (Deceptively Delicious) with either pumpkin, applesauce, banana or sweet potato
  4. Mac and Cheese with Black Beans and chicken sausage from Costco
  5. Grilled Cheese
  6. Peanut butter and Honey with Yogurt Dips (plain yogurt with honey or agave nectar)
okay there were six, but grilled cheese is a given.

Here are a few staples we always have on hand:
  1. plain yogurt
  2. honey or agave nectar
  3. black beans - the girls go through 1/2 of the can in a meal!
  4. stretch island fruit from Costco\dried mango from Trader Joes
  5. penne pasta - we call them little tunnels and if cut, can be placed on finger's
  6. olives - can't be without olives
  7. bananas
  8. apples
  9. pickles
  10. string cheese

I wish I had that cool linking tool where we could all list and see each other's, but I don't. I'd love to know what your top 5 faves for kid food are. Maybe we can all acquire something new.
Today, I hit the jackpot with a new one. Don't get too excited. There are no hidden veggies and there's a good chance the ingredients aren't organic or wholesome, but there is alot of room for additions to make up for that shortfall.
The meal today:
Reduced fat crescent rolls (the kind in the tube - this is the not so good part) filled with turkey. Eloise ate 2! She does not like meat, so it helped to get a little extra protein.

I'm not the best at getting my kids to eat, but I'm always on the look out for new ideas.

Here are mine, not sure if I have more than 5. I will just type them out:

**Bananas
**grilled cheese
**honey on whole wheat (no crust of course!)
**cheese slices
**Tillamook vanilla yogurt (she wont eat any other flavor)
**any sort of pasta with Parmesan **cheese
**carrots with ranch (this is hit and miss)
**whole wheat tortillas with laughing cow cheese spread on it
**white meat dino nuggets (the costco ones)

sigh

Hey kate,
that is a great idea, i am always wondering what other people consistently feed their kids.
Let's see, Nik eats:
-brown rice with parmesan cheese sauce, spinach and chicken
-chicken sausage
- berry yogurt, though i am going to try the agave sweetener with Nancy's plain yogurt
- ground turkey, black beans and cheese
- CHunky chicken noodle soup (he eats 1 1/2 of the big cans)
-any type of fruit available
oh and "cocoa" or chocolate as it is commonly known

The stuff my kids eat is:

-most fruit, I love the little peaches fruit cups since peaches are seasonal and my favorite fruit.
-tomato soup and grilled cheese. I float oyster crackers in the soup.
-spaghetti
-whole wheat toast - PB for wyatt and cinnamon sugar for Noelle
-cookie cutter sandwiches are always a hit. PB&J for Wyatt, lunch meat and cheese for Noelle.

I am hoping lots of you post your meals because I am in real need of ideas to try.

I have to say, the BEST advice I was given when langley started eating solids was to feed her what we are eating for each meal and not to prepare something different for her. So, Langley loves lots of things, pea pods, salmon, hummus, potstickers, whole grain waffles and pancakes, flank steak, peppers. There is very little that she won't eat, and she's great at trying new things. As her school does, we have her take a "no thank you bit" which means she has to try it and then if she doesn't like it, she can say no thank you. This has resulted in trying LOTS of new things (like salmon) and then her loving them.

Well...I'm with Katie (or Kate? I always hear Kate and Ang call you Katie. :)) I've never really thought much about kid-friendly meals; my kids are just given whatever we're having. So with that said, the meals I make most are:

-Teriyaki chicken with brown rice and lots of steamed veggies
-Chili over baked potatoes, usually served with steamed broccoli
-Spaghetti with whole wheat bread and a salad (yes, Jack eats salad; Delaney still can't chew the lettuce)
-Turkey chimichangas (thank you, Kate)
-Chicken fajitas
-Turkey meatloaf with roasted potatoes and a veggie

This was a fun post, Kate! I've been thinking about starting to post my meal plans. We'll see.

Thanks ladies for all the info. This so helpful. Wish I had a bit more traffic of the mamas to add some more, but maybe someone else can add that to their blog.
