A boy

For the first time the other day I described the baby as 'our son'. It felt really strange but normal all at the same time. What will life be like with a boy? Some say not much different, but to a mom of two little girls, I think it's going to be drastically different.

I picture him to be less emotional than the girls. Instead of crying over being punched by Lily, he'll most likely just hit her back.

I assume he will be non-verbal. Maybe not, but if he is, it will be a huge adjustment in this house. The girls talked very early and I never had a hard time knowing what they wanted. Most boys I know just point and grunt.

I have a feeling that his oldest sister's orderly habits and behaviors might be disturbed by reckless abandonment. Our organized toy shelf might not be so organized much longer. And the kitchen might as well be used as a place to hide army men rather than a place to cook imaginary chocolate cookies.

Despite all the differences, I think he'll fit right in with them at the sandbox, digging in holes and playing baseball with their dad. Instead of two little girls standing at the back door drenched in mud and sidewalk chalk, we're just adding one little boy to the mix.

Those who have boys, what do you love about having a boy(s)?

Oh, it will be different. Wonderfully different! I love, love, love little boys. And of course, I love little girls too but there is just something about my Steele. He can still be pretty emotional sometimes - more than I expect. But he's also tough. He makes noise ALL the time. Sound effects. He tells me I'm beautiful and snuggles with me. He's my buddy. Things are cut and dry with him - he gets upset or mad or disobeys and then he's done with it. I love it more than anything when he comes in all dirty and sweaty from being outside and tells me how he and Papa were "workin' hard" and that it's time for a chocolate milk break. He's gonna be such a good man.

You are going to have so much fun with that little Sam. Busy, but SO fun.

Boys are VERY different. Isaac is becoming more and more vocal, but is still pretty cave man. Hungry--eat. Tired--sleep. Play--outside. But, Isaac does wear high heels and wear pink coats and get dragged into playing house quite a bit. And doesn't seem to mind. It's just normal for him to play with sissy. Isaac hates being wet and will come in and demands an outfit change. Where as Jessica AND Tyler love to play basketball in the rain and play in the hose.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE how boys are (surprisingly) snuggly with mommy. That was one of the biggest shockers for me. They know that daddy is for playing and mommy is for snuggling. Whereas with Jessica daddy is for playing AND snuggling.

I think, besides the obvious differences, it comes down to personality. Which makes me anxious to meet this baby girl who's due out in a week or two! :)

Can't wait to hear all about how your son is worlds apart from the world you know so well....

It will be SO different. I'm still amazed, 3 years later, at how different my sweet boy is. Wonderfully different. It has been an adjustment for me... He is passionate, energetic and hysterical. He melts my heart every day!

Boys are the greatest! Definitely less whining.. and drama.. which I am definitely thankful for! They love potty talk.. and definitely agree that mom is for snuggling.. but when dad gets home he is the best jungle gym! I think that boys are more fun to watch play sports.. but I know that may bother some of you :)

Well, my little boy is only 6 mos old, so hard to tell quite yet, but he's actually quite a bit more vocal and talkative then my daughter was at that age--maybe just from being the second? I just think each child is such an unique individual, you know what I mean? Sometimes it drives me crazy when people are like "he's all boy" or this or that--my daughter loves roughhousing, jumping off of everything, loves the outdoors and exploring, playing in dirt, etc--who knows, maybe my opinion will change as my son gets bigger, but I don't want to get caught up in gender stereotypes you know? There is of course documented evidence of how females and males develop and brains function differently, but I think the bigger issue is that each child is his/her own person. Guess I'll step off my soapbox now ;)

I had 2 girls and then got my little man.He is amazing.I love having 2 girls but a boy is totally different!!
Love the little boy clothes. My little man is very protective of his mommy and loves to love on me.He says "Mom girls need lots of loving huh?" I say yes, bring it to me.And he does.He is so worried to get married and leave me behind,he actually will cry about it.He is only 4.He made me throw out that book about the mom and son, where the son grows up and rocks his mom to sleep.I think it is I will Love you Forever. He cried and cried when I read it,it is now in the garage sale pile.
I would love to have a 4th and be sure it was a boy. They are so special. It will change your world adding a little boy to it.At least it did mine!

boy diapers are so much easier! just don't forget to air mr winky, then pop the diaper back down for a sec, in case that cooler air prompts a pee or two ;-)

I was a firm believer that the gender differences were exaggerated until I had one of each of my own to compare. You'll enjoy your Sam, whoever he is, and so will his sisters. My Sam loves the kitchen, even more than his sister does, and just today was pointing and grunting to have us put on the tutu and fairly wings so he could dance. You just have to laugh at the tenderness that goes along with the brute strength. It is a whole new kind of love, just like it was with every child.

Yes...lots of different things. But GOOD different things! I have been totally amazed with Joshua's verbal abilities! Don't assume he will be slower b/c he may totally surprise you!

I had to change my ways in that I needed to become 'o.k.' with a shirt that was nearly ALWAYS dirty, nails that always needed to be cleaned and the need to dig for bugs, hit things with sticks and throw things all the time. It is just their nature! It is a wonderful difference though and I found myself feeling much more active with a boy!

I know you will do great Kate! The girls will love him too! Of course your hubster will be in love (and not quite so outnumbered!)

I also wanted to add that just yesterday I had to purchase a second baby stroller just for Josh b/c he and Jess fight like cats and dogs over who gets to push it. He also wants to try on her jewlery and her headbands. He is a snuggler too very possesive over his momma. I LOVE that part!

Well my boy is just as verbal and sensitive as any girl I've met, so that's no guarantee.

But I just want to say that the best thing about having a boy is the chance to raise a GOOD MAN. What an honour, what a challenge.

Congratulations. I have 2 older girls and a 13 month year old boy. When I was pregnant with my son I wondered everything you already posted about. All I can say is that boys melt their mamas hearts.. much like little girls melts their daddys'. I now understand the whole "mama's boy" thing.
