feedback

Alright, I need some thoughts on band-aids. Yep, band-aids.

My children want them for everything. If they bump their arm on the car, i hear, "i NEED a band-aid".

I've explained a thousand times that band-aids don't make owies stop hurting, they stop blood from coming out. They didn't really care.

Now, whenever Eloise has red on her finger, she thinks it's blood.

I know what you're thinking, "just give the kids some band-aids". It costs money people! Even if I can get them for nearly free using coupons, I guarantee the one time a child really does need it, I'll be out.

When Eloise came to me the other day after hurting herself and requested a band-aid, I told her, "Is it squirting blood all over the place?". "No", she replied. "Then you can't have one".

Heartless, I know.

Give me some feedback, please. What's your rules for band-aids?

Dont worry. That wasnt heartless. As Mom's we try to teach our kids compassion, love, care, consideration etc. But we dont want them to grow to be drama queens! LOL Its teaching them a little temperance and control. If my kids were bleeding they could have one, if not then sorry for your luck. Now my kids are between 13-20 and when I leave sometimes I tell them not to call my cell unless the house is on fire or someone is bleeding. LOL You are not heartless, you just need to teach the lesson of what band aides are for. You will do fine but if they cant go without a band aide how will they ever give birth! LOL

My kids have a bandaid phobia. Well, sort of. They hate it when their hair gets pulled off, so they refuse them even when they are warranted. Apparently I have ripped them off too carelessly, nevertheless, they probably won't ask for a bandaid for as long as they live. ;)

Ok... I have to say, I thought this was funny because when you wrote, "I know what you're thinking.." I thought, "Don't give them a bandaid." My kids love them too. We tell them bandaids are for when you're bleeding. It's the truth. Not heartless - that's what they're for. If you're not bleeding, you don't need one. And sometimes, you don't even need one if you are bleeding.

Im heartless too. I tell Kam "unless it's bleeding it doesn't get one"

Isaac is the same way and I saw the same thing to him. I don't think its heartless, they have to learn things cost money, and even though they are inexpensive we can't waste things if we don't really need to use them.

It always been a "pick your battle" thing for us, especially when L was younger. It's an outward way to help her calm down when she was upset. She went through a time where lots of bandaids were used but it was short and now she knows what they are for. She was already full of drama, and actually the bandaid cut the drama. Without it, calming down was just too hard for a while. So, my opinion, which is not the popular one, its JUST a bandaid! :)

Mixed feelings here...

Here's a PDF of a coupon for bandaids that doesn't expire until September. It doesn't say a size and I've heard that Target has travel sizes for $.97 so they'd be free. I'd say stock up! If you have a small container you could let them have a few until they're "gone"... Hope the link works!

I am the guilty overuser of bandaids in my household (well, and the clutz)! One of my kids was afraid of them, the other would resort to stickers or tape if we were out! Keep a stash of good bandaids where only you can get at them for the true emergenices and let them use the free or cheap ones until they run out.

yeah, we don't really use band-aids around here...only if something is cut or bleeding. Keely will occasionally ask for one for a bump or bruise, but I guess I started from the get-go with not using them for those kind of things...not the cost of the band-aid really, but more not to feed into the "injury" or victim mentality
--just brush it off and get up! she's proud to be a "tough girl" and usually kisses and redirection work for us but I can see how it would be a hard habit to break!

We dont' give band aids unless it is bleeding or really scuffed up(otherwise we'd use a box a day!)

We don't do bandaids unless there's blood either. He asked a lot at first but he doesn't ask that much anymore.

Our rule is if it isn't bleeding, no bandaid. But at Christmas the last couple of years I've put a box in each girl's stocking, usually the fancy character ones that I refuse to buy the rest of the year, and then they have their own bandaids to use up however they choose. The first year they were gone in two weeks, but this year I think we still may have some fancy bandaids around here somewhere.

ok, so I AM a grandmother - and looking back, I would do what Allison says - once a year give them their own box and when it is gone, it is gone. Give yourself a box and you get to decide when to use your bandaids! I promise, that while they might use a lot at first, the novelty wears off and having your very own box of bandaids just gives powerless little people some sort of control.

These are great ladies!

Allison, great idea. I think I may try that for the upcoming birthday. Tinkerbell band-aids here we come.

I should mention that the last two boxes I've gotten free. I think it's more the redundant asking that sends me over the edge. But I'm thinking the having your own box will do some good.

Oh Kate, I was laughing - we have exactly the same situation. Instant whimpering at the sight of a red spot "mummy I'm blooding" (try as I might I can't persuade L that the word is bleeding, and that's not what she's doing!
I'm super stingy on band aids, except they get a pack in their christmas stockings to do with what they will. They were gone by the middle of January...
